The most impressive gorges around Lake Thun
Where there is a lake, there is usually at least one stream or river. And where the water flows, there is always a gorge. Around Lake Thun, the water meanders through gorges directly into the lake. We have collected the most impressive gorges for you.
St. Beatus Caves
The St. Beatus caves are one of the top excursion destinations around Lake Thun. Especially in bad weather, the cave offers the necessary protection from the rain. Strictly speaking, the Beatus Caves are not a gorge, as the cave is closed at the top. Nevertheless, it is impressive how the water finds its way through the rocks to the outside and finally into Lake Thun.

Gorge "Cholerenschlucht"
On the same side of the lake, but a little closer to Thun, is the Choleren Gorge. The best way to admire it is on a hike up to Rabeflue. However, some stamina is required for this. The ascent from Hünibach through the Choleren Gorge, past forest and waterfalls, takes just under two hours. On the Rabeflue, the view of Lake Thun and the mountains awaits as an ideal reward. The descent to Steffisburg then takes a good hour and a half.

Aare Gorge
Probably the most famous gorge in the Bernese Oberland is the Aareschlucht. As the name suggests, it is the source of the Aare River - one of the longest rivers in Switzerland. The gorge is 1.4 kilometers long and up to 200 meters deep. The entire path can be walked on safe footbridges and tunnels during a 45-minute walk. An exciting nature experience for everyone!
