Describe to us what a typical day looks like as a Chef de Service/Deputy General Manager at Grizzly Bear Adventure Land.
In the morning, I arrive and help prepare everything for the lunch service. I also go to the office and check the mails and coordinate the appointments for our managing director, Alex Reichen. At the moment, I'm more in the service department because we're suffering from a shortage of skilled workers. I do break replacements, help in the lunch service, am there for the guests and make sure they are comfortable. In the afternoon, I check the To Dos with the afternoon service, help prepare everything for the evening service and, if necessary, already for the upcoming banquets. Besides, our terrace is usually well attended in the afternoon. The guests like to come by for dessert. As soon as it's a bit quieter, I also have time to do a few more office tasks and take care of the hotel.
What do you like most about your job?
The grizzly bear and the people who work here. I always give my heart and soul as if it were my own business. I love it when guests come back because of me and absolutely want to be served by me. That always makes me very happy and gives me a lot.
What makes the Grizzly Bear Adventure Land a good employer? What has made you work here for 8 years?
The team is incredibly important. We can laugh together, even when things get stressful. We have fun at work and I enjoy working with the people here. We all pull together. I also like our regulars who keep coming back because of us. The ambience is another reason. We have a beautiful lakeside terrace overlooking Lake Dittlig. The atmosphere is magical, even when the weather is not so nice. There is something for everyone. Everything just fits together.
Your place of work is directly on Lake Thun. Do you also benefit from this location in your free time?
Yes, definitely. I grew up in the Bern region and didn't know the Thun region and the Bernese Oberland that well. Since I've been working here, I'm much more likely to do something in the Lake Thun region. It brings me closer to the region and opens my horizons. I even live here now and feel very comfortable.
What would you like to pass on to anyone who is considering an apprenticeship in the hotel industry?
Just look at your strengths. If you like contact with guests, are open-minded and enjoy talking to a wide variety of people, a career in the hotel industry is certainly right for you.
