Loris Beutter - in training as a hotel communications specialist
About Loris Beutter
Name: Loris Beutter
Position: Trainee hotel communication specialist since summer 2020
Hobbies: Spending time with friends, keeping up to date with news in the hotel industry
My highlights in the Lake Thun region: the old town, the Schlossberg with the beautiful view of Thun, the castles around Lake Thun, especially Oberhofen Castle.
Hotel communication specialist, I can imagine that not everyone knows what this training entails. Why don't you tell us?
The first three months of my training I was assigned to the kitchen, then I continued in housekeeping for four months. Now my workplace is at the reception - the heart of every hotel. This will also be the focus of my training. In the meantime, I was also able to gain insights into the human resources department, marketing and sales. The interfaces within a hotel are very important and I will get to know them in the three years.
Describe to us what a typical day at the reception looks like at Deltapark.
This is very dependent on which shift I am assigned to. We always get a handover from the previous shift about what is still to be done that day. That's where I read in first and prepare well for my shift. The main tasks are the check-ins or check-outs - this depends on the shift. The top priority is to be there for the guests, be it by email, by phone or personally on site.
It sounds like it can be quite hectic at times. Do you manage not to lose the overview?
It is very important that the guests who are at the reception come first and that I take my time for them. The paperwork can always be done later. That is something I really had to learn. Also that we are a team and I am allowed to hand things in if I have too much on my to-do list.
Why did you choose this training company?
The luxury hotel industry has always fascinated me. The level that Delta Park offers its guests is very versatile. Fitness, wellness, preventive health offers and top gastronomy. The Deltapark is the only hotel around Lake Thun where two restaurants have been awarded Gault Millau points. That appealed to me. It's fun to do my training in such a company. I can learn everything I need for my future working life here - I couldn't ask for more.
What do you like most about your job?
This answer is simple: to inspire people. For me, the best thing about my working day is that the guests leave the hotel and say: "Wow! That was great.". And that we can offer them a time-out in which they can escape from their stressful everyday lives. In the best case, they tell others about it at home and more guests come.
I particularly remember when a lady was a guest who probably doesn't often stay in hotels like this. She was so excited when we offered her a welcome drink and a voucher for the Stockhorn cable car. She thanked us so much and couldn't stop raving. That was a highlight for me. It confirms to me that I am in the right place here.
In the hotel industry, working hours are usually irregular, how do you deal with that?
I enjoy working on holidays. The mood is great, there is more going on and there is a completely different atmosphere. The guests are also relaxed and look forward to their time with us. Most of the time, I have one of the three Christmas days off. But during the week, when it's quiet, I can go into town and do my shopping.
Your place of work is directly on Lake Thun. Do you also benefit from this location in your free time?
Yes, that's really great. During room hours I can go to Lake Thun, which is always really refreshing. The connection with my work colleagues is also very different. If I can do something with them in the room hours, they also become real friends. I also don't get used to the fact that it's so beautiful here. It inspires me every day.
What are your plans after your training as a hotel communications specialist?
My goal after the training is the 5-star hotel industry. That's where you have to step it up a notch in terms of guest service. The suitcases are brought to the room, the car is parked and so on. The guests are really taken care of and they don't have to think about anything except enjoying their stay. I would definitely like to experience that after my training. What I would like to do afterwards or where exactly I will go, I don't know yet.
What advice would you like to give to all those who are considering an apprenticeship in the hotel industry?
It just has to be fun. If you get up in the morning and are excited to go to work, then it's all good. It's best to do a trial stay at a hotel of your choice and don't put any pressure on yourself. At first, I wanted to learn restaurant management, but then I liked it better at the reception. You should be open and listen to your gut feeling.
And what would you like to say in conclusion?
I am really lucky and very grateful that I am in such good hands at Deltapark. It is like "coming home" and there is always someone there - even if something goes wrong. I would always choose this training and this training company again.
Many thanks, dear Loris, for the exciting and informative interview. We wish you continued success in your training and your future career in the hotel industry.
