Situated at the very back of the Justistal basin, the pastureland is concentrated on the north-west slope and the valley floor at 1310 to 1500 m above sea level. This is also the most accessible and fertile part, although it is susceptible to trampling at the border to Gross-Mittelberg. In contrast, the flank sections are subject to strong avalanches, so that major work obligations have to be fulfilled every year in order to maintain the farm. In addition to the blackthorn, the good sward is adversely affected above all by the Hundsprägel.

WAYS TO THE ALP

By car you can get from Gunten via Sigriswil - or from Interlaken via Beatenberg on the goods road - to Grön (car park at 1124 m, from here general driving ban!). From here it is an hour's walk along the mountain trail into the valley. The approach from Merligen (by boat or bus, 568 m) leads very steeply through orchards, forest and gorge, following the Grönbach stream or on secondary routes in 3.5 hours to the alpine hut (Hiking Book 3100, Route 20). From the Sigriswil post bus stop (810 m), it takes 2.5 hours on the road or secondary routes (mountain hiking trails) or from Beatenberg (1120 m, funicular from Beatenbucht or post bus from Interlaken) 2 hours on the road (attention: unlit road tunnel 350 m long) to the alp.

The Hinterstberg hut is shared by Oberhofnerberg and Sigriswilerbergli when the latter is in the Unterstafel. This and the fact that the mountain hut is very much dependent on the weather make the alp interesting, but not entirely easy to manage.
