Enjoying Lake Thun with swimming activities
From the Delta Park in Gwatt, which lies directly on Lake Thun, you not only have a view of the beautiful lake but also direct access to the lake. All dog lovers really get their money's worth here. If you are willing to leash your dog every now and then, you can take a nice walk along the lake towards the city centre. From the Delta Park Vitalresort (Deltaweg 29, Gwatt), first walk a short distance along the main road, then turn onto the hiking trail towards Seewinkel.
and walk through the beautiful Bonstetten Park. The majority of it is a nature reserve, so the dog must be kept on a leash. But the mood is good, with all the little groups settling down by the lake, the children's laughter on the playgrounds and the breeding areas for the various wild animals that were only created in 2020. In Bonstetten Park itself there are various paths and and the many park benches invite you to linger.
If you like bathing with your dog, you can wade in the lake for quite a long time without having to swim yourself. Zuma loves swimming, me a little less so, so we have a good opportunity to spend a long time together in waist-deep water. The small wooden bridges that lead through the park also offer a special ambience. If you want to go further, you can walk through a small group of houses along the canal to the lido. From Delta Park to the lido and back is a little over 7.5 flat kilometres. If you only want to cover half the kilometres, you can simply take the STI bus back, which stops directly in front of the Delta Park.
Digestive walk to the lakeside meadow
A quick walk with the dog before dinner or a spa meal? Or do you fancy a quick digestive walk? Then we recommend the Seewiese. From the Delta Park in the direction of Lake Thun, simply keep to the right and follow the hiking trail. Soon you will see a sign indicating that you can reach the Seewiese in 5 minutes.
The Seewiese offers a little peace and seclusion. Because it can only be reached on foot, it is usually not crowded. After a good 700 meters from the main house through the small forest in the nature reserve, you are already there. The meadow itself has a small playground, some benches at the lakeside, barbecue areas and in the summer months a snack truck. Dogs must be kept on a leash on the way there. On the fenced lake meadow, the dog can then be well let off the leash. Bathing fun included - it has some entry points and at the snack truck is the current water temperature. Back to the hotel it goes on the same way, because the way to the Seewiese is a dead end. The short walk is definitely worth it, if only to escape the hustle and bustle a bit when the weather is nice. But for longer stretches along the beautiful Lake Thun, we recommend the other direction.
Stockhorn experience with two lakes
The Stockhorn offers a really beautiful experience. Depending on your mood, everything can be done on foot. Personally, we like to walk up and enjoy the wow feeling at the "Chrindi" middle station when you peer around the corner and see Hinterstockensee. Then we take the cable car for the descent. The Stockhorn cable car is happy to carry dogs (it's generally a very dog-friendly area here), the parking spaces are also reasonably affordable right at the valley station in Erlenbach and the Stockhorn is also easy to reach from Thun by public transport.
Walking up from Erlenbach requires some stamina and surefootedness. It takes a good four hours from the valley station to the middle station. But once you have reached your destination, you are truly rewarded: up there, all is still right with the world.
The fishermen greet you in a friendly manner, now and then you see a few trail runners and even if you have come this far by train, there are now great hiking opportunities in the peaceful nature. On the one hand, you can hike from the middle station to the Stockhorn itself. Or you can choose the circular route around the two lakes. My dog Zuma definitely prefers the "bädele" in the lake, we always choose at least one lake. And even during the alpine season, when the cows are up on the pastures (approx. May to September), everything is well fenced off and there are always places where the dogs are allowed to bathe.
The cows do not react to the dogs. They know this type of animal and continue to graze peacefully. The shortest and flattest route is to walk around the lake from the middle station of Hinterstockensee or still hike to Oberstockensee. Both take a good hour.
The Stockhorn offers other activities, such as scooter biking, brunch on the Stockhorn, adventure trail etc. We also recommend this region in winter, it has beautiful snowshoe trails and groomed winter hiking trails. Either way, we recommend an excursion, weather permitting.
Enjoying the view on the Niesen
With the Panoramacard Lake Thun you get a 20% discount on the Niesen cable car. The Niesen is definitely a mountain worth climbing. After all, the pyramid-like mountain stands out with its light on the summit - it cannot be missed from the Hotel Deltapark in Gwatt.
But it doesn't necessarily have to be climbed on foot. Firstly, because the way up is very long and involves a lot of altitude gain; the route from the Mülenen station to the Niesen is posted as taking five hours. Then there are the red and white marked mountain paths, which demand a certain amount of surefootedness. And the railway is simply worth the experience. It is the longest funicular in Europe and covers the good 1600 metres in altitude at a patient pace. Dogs are allowed on the Niesenbahn and only cost Fr. 5.-.
At the top of the Niesen is the Niesendörfli - a large playground for children. Basically, the Niesen doesn't have much to offer for dogs. It's worth a trip for Zuma and me, especially at the beginning and end of the season, because there's more snow than usual in the region. And showing this to the snow-crazy husky girl and playing with her in the cold white at over 2300 is definitely worth the trip. Of course, the view from the Niesen over Thun and the entire Aare and Gürbetal valleys is also worth the trip. In addition to sunrise rides, you can also go up for brunch on the Niesen.
walk along the beautiful green Aare river
Endo Anaconda, frontman of Stiller Has sings:
"Why don't you follow the river a bit?
Lue wie d velöle velöle mit ihremne velo
The beautiful green aara naa
Dere aare na"
The Thun region has plenty of lakes to offer. But those who prefer flowing waters will also get their money's worth. In the middle of the city of Thun, next to Schadau Castle, the Aare comes from Interlaken. And the walks along the Aare are almost limitless. Even those who want to jog longer distances - preferring the flat - can't go wrong with the Aare. Starting in Thun (e.g. in Schwäbis), a permanent riverside path leads along the right bank via Uttigen, Kiesen, Wichtrach to Bern.
Again and again there is the possibility to cross the Aare and in most places the path leads back along the Aare. Where it is not possible to return directly along the Aare, the path is very close to the bank. As on all rivers, there are sometimes a lot of people: dog walkers, joggers and cyclists meet here. With an obedient dog, however, this is not a problem and he can also be left free for the most part. If you still want to look for a lake, for example with dogs that like to swim (this is not recommended when the water level is high in the Aare anyway), then this is possible in the Blauseeli in Uttigen or in the Seerosesee in Kiesen. However, they are certainly not among the most beautiful lakes.
There is a cycle path on one side of the Aare - so if you prefer to cycle and don't know the area so well, you can't go far wrong with the Aare. There is also the option of returning to Thun by train.
Easy walk to the Amsoldinger and Uebeschi lakes
If the weather is not so nice, we can recommend the walk to Lakes Amsoldingen and Uebeschi. This is a great alternative to Lake Thun and both lakes can be reached within two hours from the Delta Park in Gwatt. Just follow the signs to Amsoldingen and Uebeschi and enjoy the landscape on the easy hiking trail. The roads are actually always quite wide and rather flat. All in all, it is an ascent of 200 metres to the second lake, Uebeschisee. The metres in altitude are practically all mastered at the beginning - in Gwattegg towards Zwieselberg. There it is worth turning around every now and then to catch a glimpse of Lake Thun. Then along the forest in the direction of Amsoldingen and soon you can see the lake and Amsoldingen Castle. It is not possible to visit the castle as it is privately owned. Past the castle, a path leads along the lake to the second lake, Uebeschisee.
This is smaller, but a little more accessible and, from our point of view, a little more idyllic. It takes about two hours to reach the jetty at Uebeschisee and the dogs can often be let loose. Since many paths are asphalted or have pebbles, the walk is also good in light rain. You can easily return by STI bus, which is free with the Panoramacard and also transports dogs.
