10 Years of Deltapark Vitalresort – A Journey Through Time, Vision, and Development on Lake Thun

What once began as a vision is now a wellness resort that combines relaxation, exercise, and enjoyment. To mark its 10th anniversary, we look back on the history of the Deltapark Vitalresort—from its geological origins to the influential figures who shaped it, and the milestones that have made this special place what it is today.

How Water Became Land – The Kandern Canal as the Origin
The story begins long before the first building was constructed. With the construction of the Kander Canal between 1711 and 1714, the Kander River was diverted into Lake Thun. From then on, the river carried large quantities of gravel, sand, and silt, which it deposited at its mouth.
This is how the Kander Delta was formed over the course of decades. Layer by layer, new land emerged. What was once water became alluvial soil and later usable land. To this day, this natural foundation shapes the landscape around the Deltapark.
Until a few years ago, gravel was extracted from the delta to prevent Lake Thun from splitting into an upper and lower basin.

From Farmstead to Community Hub – Lisel Moser’s Vision
The true history of the site begins in 1929 with a clear vision. Lisel Moser wanted to create a place where young people could meet. As early as 1930, she took over the estate and gradually developed it further.
Over the following decades, what began as a simple retreat center evolved into a vibrant place for people to meet and interact. New buildings such as the Schilfhaus, the Leiterhaus, and later the distinctive tent houses came to define the site. The youth camp transformed into a seminar and hotel facility.
Despite steady growth, the economic situation remains challenging. In 2000, the decision was made to sell the site. Eight years later, a new chapter began.

The Turning Point – Takeover by the Hauenstein Family
In 2008, the Hauenstein family took over the Gwatt-Zentrum. With the purchase of approximately 86,000 square meters of land, the transformation into a modern wellness resort began.
The vision is clear: Public access is to be preserved, while at the same time the site will be reimagined and developed in a sustainable manner. An ambitious project of great significance for the region.
Construction Phase – Eight Years of Planning, Courage, and Perseverance
The development of the Deltapark Vitalresort is no simple process. Planning, coordination, and negotiations have been ongoing for several years. Objections and complex permitting procedures have repeatedly delayed the project.
The scale of the project is extraordinary. Operations will be suspended for several years during the construction phase. At the same time, about 20 jobs will be preserved—an important sign of continuity despite profound change.
The approach to the existing buildings is particularly noteworthy. The three tent-style buildings from the 1960s will be preserved and extensively renovated. At the same time, a modern hotel building is being constructed, which will be completed in a short period of time.
Construction work in the Kander Delta presents additional challenges. The lakeside villas and the lagoon require complex pile foundations. During excavation, contaminated sites and an oil tank are also being removed—traces of the past that are now coming to light.
After about eight years, the time has finally come: The new resort is ready.

2016 – The Opening of a New Venue
The Deltapark Vitalresort will officially open in May 2016. Operations will begin as early as March with a soft opening to optimize processes and help the team gel.
Spanning approximately 86,000 square meters, a new destination is taking shape that is consistently focused on holistic well-being. Located directly on Lake Thun and nestled in a protected natural landscape, the resort combines relaxation, activity, and enjoyment.
The philosophy is based on three key elements: relaxation, exercise, and enjoyment. These elements continue to shape the guest experience to this day.
Since it opened, the business has grown significantly. What started with about 50 employees has now grown into a company with over 100 jobs, including numerous apprenticeships.

2017 – Lakeside Villas Right on the Water
Just one year later, the offerings will be expanded. The exclusive lakeside villas will provide retreats with direct lakefront access and a high degree of privacy, while remaining fully connected to the resort.
This project marks the completion of the comprehensive construction phase for the site. Architecturally, the villas feature clean lines, large windows, and light-filled rooms. The result is a living experience with a unique character and a direct connection to the surrounding area.

2019 – Culinary Diversity with an International Flavor
With Deltaverde Thai Cuisine, the resort is strategically expanding its culinary offerings. Authentic Thai cuisine brings new culinary experiences to Lake Thun.
Fresh ingredients, traditional cooking methods, and an experienced kitchen team are the hallmarks of the restaurant’s concept. Shortly after opening, the restaurant received an award and has since become a staple in the region.

2021 – When the Forces of Nature Challenge Everyday Life
In the summer of 2021, the Deltapark Vitalresort found itself facing an extraordinary situation. After heavy rainfall, Lake Thun overflowed its banks, and parts of the resort were flooded.
Thanks to swift action, targeted protective measures, and a strong team spirit, operations can be maintained and major damage prevented. This incident clearly demonstrates how important solidarity and proactive action are.

2022 – Passing on Responsibility
With the handover of leadership to Kevin Furrer, a new chapter begins in the management of Deltapark. After working abroad, he is returning to the region to take on the role of host.
This change represents both continuity and further development. Existing values are preserved, while new ideas are introduced.

2025 to Present – Continued Development with a Focus on Health and Retirement
The renovation of the Waldhaus will expand the range of services offered. Exclusive wellness suites with private spa areas will be created, as well as a new therapy and fitness center in collaboration with PhysioFit Schönberg.
The combination of relaxation and medical expertise will be further strengthened. At the same time, new spaces for retreat and individual regeneration are being created.
These investments are part of a long-term strategy aimed at continuously improving quality and expanding our offerings.
