I love celebrating birthdays. Only my own I usually arrange like any other "normal" day. I wanted to spend my 35th birthday the same way, but my husband had a different plan. Behind my back, he organised childcare for our children and an overnight stay at the Belvédère Strandhotel in beautiful Spiez.

Even the journey along the lake awakened a holiday mood, and when we arrived at the hotel we received a friendly welcome. The first surprise awaited me in our room. The bed was romantically decorated, a heart made of rose petals and 2 swans formed into a heart, plus a bottle of champagne, chocolates and fruit.

With a glass of champagne, we enjoyed the breathtaking view of Lake Thun and the bay of Spiez from our balcony. We spent the afternoon in the hotel's wellness area with various saunas, steam baths and (for me the highlight) an infinity pool with sunbathing lawn. Before dinner, we had an aperitif in the Captain's Bar, where you can have a drink in a casual atmosphere and watch the sunset.

In the evening, a romantic candlelight dinner in 4 courses awaited us. For each course, we could choose between different suggestions and thus compose our own menu. By candlelight we enjoyed the exquisite food which was placed on the plate with a lot of love down to the smallest detail. "The way to a man's heart is through his stomach", as they say, and with this menu it was absolutely to the point.

After a relaxing night, we started the day with a varied breakfast from the buffet before we drove back to everyday life full of new energy. I probably won't celebrate my birthday in a big way, but I like to surprise myself every year with a time-out like this.
