Behind the scenes with Janneth - housekeeping employee at Solbadhotel
Janneth Heredia
Position: Employee housekeeping
Hobbies: cycling, spending time at the lake, reading, walking, skiing
My highlights in the Lake Thun region: The proximity to the lake and the mountains. The different seasons always offer a different variety of activities.
Describe to us what a typical day looks like as a housekeeping employee at Solbadhotel.
I mainly work in the F service. This starts at 10:30 and ends at 19:30. My working day starts when I report to the governess. She then hands me the to-do list for my workday, on which various tasks are listed with a time sequence. Thanks to this list, I have a good overview of the activities and know what to expect throughout the day. I then start preparing the private spa suites for the guests and make sure that everything is prepared according to their wishes. Just before noon, I help prepare the dining room for the staff lunch. After lunch, this is then cleaned up again by me. I then collect the bed linen and towels from the hotel rooms and take them to our in-house lingerie. Here I am responsible for loading and emptying the washing machines. We also wash the shirts of the service and reception team. In the afternoon, I take time to iron the shirts. Furthermore, I check the bathrobes and terry cloths in the Solbad about once an hour and refill them if necessary. If there are more bookings for the private spa suites, I clean the suites and prepare them for the next guests. In between all the work, guests' requests keep coming in, such as extra towels or pillows to bring to the room, which I am more than happy to fulfill. Around 5:00 p.m., I again help with the preparation for the staff dinner. My workday ends with a final check in the Solbad to make sure everything is replenished and ready for the guests.
What do you particularly appreciate about working at the Solbadhotel?
I have now been working at the Solbadhotel for 12 years. The work is very versatile and varied. The different duties are also a welcome change. When I'm on early duty, I start at 6:00 a.m. and finish work at 3:00 p.m. I especially like this shift. I particularly like this shift.
What I also really appreciate is the cooperation with my boss. She always takes good care of a good distribution of tasks, it's fun with her and you often have something to laugh about. As a team, we look out for each other. Sometimes it is a little bit difficult to communicate, because not all employees in the team speak good German, but also here we always find a solution. :)
What do you like most about your job?
The best thing is to see that the guests are satisfied and enjoy their stay with us at the Solbadhotel. It is especially nice when the guests are satisfied with my personal performance and appreciate this towards me. Because I put a lot of love and motivation into my work.
You work in an industry with irregular working hours. What do you like about it or not so much?
That's probably the only point that I don't like so much. Most of our work is done on weekends or holidays. However, we have the option of entering requests for time off if we would like to have time off on a weekend or holiday. And the requests for time off are usually always taken into account.
Your place of work is in a wonderful location high above Lake Thun. Do you also benefit from this location in your free time?
Yes very much. I am originally from Ecuador. In Switzerland you have the wonderful seasons and each one offers different opportunities to be active in nature. In winter I even started skiing. After a short time I was able to whiz down the slopes and it is incredibly fun.
